My eyes snapped open.
I looked around me, blinking the sleep away. I hadn't realized how late it was until now. The sun was high in the sky, and I had a mission for the day. Too bad most of the day would be wasted just trying to get there. I stood up, stretched, and shook my pelt to free it of unwanted debris. I sat now, deciding if I would go straight there or wait and catch prey first. After a few moments' thought, I decided on the latter. As if to remind me of my hunger, my belly rumbled loudly. "Time to find a bite to eat." I told myself. I ambled out from my nest on the edge of some woods, and started off toward a place where I knew prey could be found. Luckily, it was not far away, and I could get there easily. I knew the place by name- I always had. My family had lived here for as long as I could remember, but for now, I lived farther off. It was called the Pond of Silver Souls, for the silvery shadows of the many fishes floated beneath the glassy surface, as though they were souls at peace. It did not take a lot longer for me to get there, as my territory was on the path toward it.
I padded toward it, having finally spotted it. It was not a place where larger prey could be found, but fish were caught here without much trouble. And it was fish that I craved this morning. It had been told for many, many years that pups who fed on these fish would grow up big and strong. I myself had eaten these fish all my life. I stalked to the edge of the pond and sat, making sure that my shadow did not fall across its surface. Two large, bright silver fish floated along beneath me; Now was my chance. I plunged my head into the water and grabbed the fish before they had much time to escape. With a gasping breath, I lifted my head, my meal dangling from my jaws. I placed the fish on the bank and retreated to eat the succulent meal. I ripped into the first fish, letting its juices flow into my mouth. After a few mouthfuls, the first fish was done. I repeated this with the second fish, and having eaten my fill for the moment, I went off in search of a place to bury the bones. When I was satisfied with the hold I found, I placed earth back over them, and went on my way.
If I was to reach the place I intended to go, I must rush there. Even though I had needed the fish, it had wasted more time if I still wanted to make it there before nightfall. I broke into a run, passing quickly through the territory it had taken me so short a time to know. I was now on my way to the most perfect den site I had ever seen. With just a little pruning, it would be flawless. The ferns and other foliage there was somewhat overgrown. With a few wolves to pluck some of the plants down, it would be just right.
The sun had started to set while I was eating the fish, and was rapidly sinking lower in the sky. Now, the territory I was running along was not so familiar, and I realized with horror that I had gone too far. I had passed it. I spun around, following my scent trail straight back to the pond. In my haste I had forgotten how close it was to the pond itself. But as soon as I reached the pond, I shot off toward the den site. The ferns tickled my nose as I pushed through the woods. I was finally there. It was not really something I was used to, though I had known about it my whole life. My heart raced at the sight of all the good places that dens could be made. I pulled back my lips in a wide toothy grin, giggling at the thought of how I must look.
I was a full grown wolf, six years old to be exact, and here I was in the middle of a clearing in the woods, giggling at the thought of myself. If anyone else had been there to see me, I would have kept all emotions in check, but I was totally alone, save for whatever prey might be hiding out. I was so happy I had found this place. I knew of a group of wolves who lived near here, but they really didn't have anyone to take charge of them. They were all too young and inexperienced, but now I was here to lead them. Today would be the day I would remember the most, being the day that I became the alpha male.
I lay down in the grass, having just realized how exhausted I really was. My eyes closed briefly, but I knew that if I fell asleep now, someone else would claim this land out from beneath me. Exhausted though I was, I raised my face to the moon, which had risen as I looked around in wonder at the clearing I now was laying in. I opened my jaws in a solitary howl, knowing that the others would hear me. If they chose to obey and follow me or not, that was their decision. At the moment, none of it mattered to me. I had finally claimed this land in the name of Washakie Pack. I am Ghost, Alpha male of these wolves. I welcome you to my lands, loner, if you agree to follow me.
